The Best Wakeboards and How to Get Started

Wakeboarding

Wakeboarding is an cool sport that anyone can enjoy if they get off to the right start. Learning to wakeboard is something that anyone with access to a lake, as well as a boat, can do and it's enjoyable for your friends too.

Just follow these simple steps and you’ll be having fun wakeboarding before you know it.

1. Buy A Wakeboard

The most important part. If you are a beginner or you want to have a board that your family can use to check out wakeboarding, you don’t want to buy a high-end wakeboard. Very high-end wakeboards will be too difficult to control and you will fall more than you ride! Wakeboards such as the Liquid Force Harley Wakeboard are a super choice.

Ask for one that has a continuous rocker and do not get the more advanced 3-stage rocker.

For board size, you want to chose a board the is correct for your weight. Here are the ranges we recommend:

Weight: 90-160 Ibs.

Length: 134 cm

Weight: 160-200 Ibs.

Size: 138 cm

Weight: 200 Ibs.

Size: 142 cm or longer

2. Wakeboard Bindings

For wakeboard bindings there are closed toe and open toe. Beginners will want to get an open toe binding, as will people that prefer a binding that can work for a few foot sizes.

Chose the Binding based on your shoe size. For Bindings that are listed as small, medium, large or x-large, you should try them on to ensure you get the right fit.

3. The One-Size-Fits-All Wakeboard

If you want a wakeboard and binding that you and several family members can use, or that you can leave at your cottage for anyone to use, we suggest getting an average board, such as a 138 and a 9/10 binding. Just be aware that if someone has smaller feet, they should consider sitting this one out rather than risk being hurt. You can also get two sets of bindings .

4. Making your Boat Wakeboard Friendly

Your boat has to be able to pull a person behind it on a wakeboard at about 17-25 mph. If you have an aluminum fishing boat with a 20hp motor, that isn't likely going to work!

You also want a boat that has a big wake and you need a connector on the back of the boat to attach a tow rope to.

5. Wakeboard Rope and Handle vs. Ski Rope

You need a wakeboard rope & handle. These aren't very expensive, so I suggest you get one. A ski rope will stretch, so you don't want to use a ski rope. The good rope will last you a long time, so it's wise to pay for a good one that is tangle-proof and is really comfortable.
